This is the first update to be listed on the web site giving a brief summation of items that may be of interest to members. Should you see anything on this web site that needs updating or have any suggestions please contact the state secretary: firstname.lastname@example.org
Veteran Liaison Officers: You will find under notices a list of VLOs in DVA contracted private hospitals in Qld. The association is presently liaising with DVA to ensure veterans are made aware of these positions and the role they are expected to carry out. Should you be admitted to a private hospital you should be given a copy of DVA Fact Sheet HSV74 outlining admission and hospital procedures. You can also inquire if there is a VLO/Discharge Planner who can assist you, or your family, on DVA matters while you’re hospitalised. If you encounter problems advise DVA.
Kookaburra Kids: KK is a new organisation in Qld that caters for children of veterans who suffer mental disabilities of any form. Children are taken on camps and other wide-ranging activities. KK is fully endorsed by DVA and their web site is www.kookaburrakids.com
Gold Card: No veteran should be asked to pay a ‘gap’ payment for using the DVA Gold Card. If this occurs, then contact DVA immediately. Unfortunately, more and more practitioners are not accepting the Gold Card. This is an issue being pursued vigorously by the TPI Association. It pays to ring beforehand to ensure a practitioner accepts the gold card. If a gap is to be paid DVA can reimburse provided you have no choice other than see the practitioner as endorsed by your LMO.
DVA Transport: If you have a weekend booking ring DVA and get the booking number and the name of the provider. If there is a problem, you can ring the provider direct as DVA Transport does not operate on weekends. Any time you have a transport advice DVA.
DVA Gold Card Pharmacy Items. Under Notices you will find a list of medicines available through DVA. This list would be of benefit to your LMO.
Hearing Aids. No TPI should be aske to pay for a hearing aid. If this occurs please contact DVA. Any problems contact state office.
Facebook: A useful Facebook group is Aussie Veterans Health, Recreation and Respite Locations in Australia. Good reference for grey nomads and welfare issues.
Definition Of A Veteran: To clarify the definition of a veteran it was agreed by all state Veteran Ministers to agree on this definition as promulgated by a Joint Communique from the Minister DVA in November 2017: The Roundtable reached consensus on a common definition of veteran that is to be recognised by all jurisdictions. It was agreed that a veteran would be defined as ‘a person who is serving or has served in the ADF’. Ministers agreed use of the term veteran should not be limited by the definitions contained in existing legislation.
Buying A New Vehicle: Contact Beryl at the office to ensure you receive the correct letters of authorisation for GST discount including possible additional Fleet Discounts for certain makes.
Legacy: Legacy relies on Volunteer Legatees for their vital work. Anyone interested in being a Legatee should contact Qld Legacy.
